Scientists have shown that it is possible to establish a wireless transmission signals using 10,000 times less energy than is required in the conventional technology. The team named their technology “Passive Wi-Fi network” and this may be the key Wi-Fi technologies in the coming years.
Passive Wi-Fi communicates within the broadcast. Researchers transferred the radio components in a device that sends a signal to a room or a corner. This signal is then absorbed and reflected by a digital switch at a much lower power.
The technology can transmit wireless signal rates of up to 11 Mbps and reaches the communication range of up to 100 feet (30 meters), which is certainly better than the home router.
This means that the passive Wi-Fi can continue to send data, and to consume 1,000 times less energy than the lowest energy existing standards, such as Bluetooth.
This is potentially not only can change the entire industry, but also to open up the market for a brand new networking products. The technology will be presented in March at the 13th Conference USENIX Symposium.
